What are the dividends of good Governance? Is it govt putting food on the table, providing jobs & basic utility amenities for it’s citizens or passing laws and executing manifesto promises.
In most countries constructive cooperation & engagement between the legislature, executive and judiciary is preferred for smooth operation of govt to enable government achieve it’s manifesto promises & good governance with minimal glitches.
In Nigeria those bitter with Govt having lost at the polls call this a rubber stamp assembly lol 😆
Despite PDP’s 16yrs of super majority in the NASS, it was bedeviled with perpetual conflict between the Executive & the the legislature.
Executive bills languished in the NASS & various PDP Presidents refused to sign into law numerous bills passed by NASS.
During times of relative plenty the NASS took eternity to pass the National budget which resulted in delays in execution of govt projects & policies.
As a result PDP years resulted in poor legislative performance of the NASS with numerous infighting & leadership crises which witnessed a series of impeachment of it’s leadership.
It also scored low in terms of the number and quality of laws passed. Govt failed to restructure Nigeria, failed to pass a PIB bill in 16yrs, failed to reform our tax laws or reduce the number of items on the Exclusive list. Very few consequential bills were passed & those passed such as Electricity privatisation were botched & compromised.
APC govt’s have passed numerous consequential laws such as not to young to run, amended the Electoral act, Petroleum Industry Act, Local Govt & Judicial Autonomy, Removed Power from the Exclusive list & now we have complete reform of our tax system with PBAT signing into law 4 bills which will come into force 01 Jan 2026.
Govt has no responsibility to provide jobs, food on the table of Nigerians or provide utilities such as water, electricity gas or cheap subsidised pms to its citizens. None of these are provisions in our much malaigned amended 1999 constitution.
In other countries we admire from afar such as US, UK, etc there are numerous people suffering from poverty, many who can’t eat 3 square meals many living homeless on the streets.
In these countries Govt does not provide electricity, water, gas or Subsidised Petroleum. These are all provided by the private sector at market determined rates. If you want these services you have to pay private service providers for them. Nothing to do with Govt.
The one thing that is specifically provided is to provide for the security & well being of Nigerians.
In providing for our security no govt can stop it’s citizens from killing themselves if they so desire. There is no Govt on earth that has eradicated man’s desire to kill or commit all manner of crimes.
However as a country develops and increases in prosperity & productivity it is able over time to upgrade and improve its capacity to combat criminality & secure the lives of it’s citizens.
Most Nigerians are safe despite the perception of mass insecurity. When insecurity is being politicised & used as a weapon to oppose govt it becomes difficult to have a honest.dispassionate discussion about the extent of insecurity.
For the first time in recent years our police have arrested those alleged to have masterminded & taken part in the mass murder of 200 Nigerians. Now more than ever we need All eyes on the Judiciary to see to their successful prosecution, conviction & execution.
The provision of transport Infrastructure is a function of Govt which has been poorly delivered to Nigerians because Govt for decades choose to waste it’s resources on corrupt subsidies on Petroleum Electricity & FX subsidies. In the past Nigeria subsidised food imports & the little pipebourne water provided was free.
Manifesto Promises made & kept. Removal of Petroleum Subsidy, Floating the Naira, Student loans, reform of tax system, credit services to Nigerians & businesses, Agricultural revolution, Opening up the Solid minerals sector, Local Govt Autonomy and more to come
You can continue to lament good leadership & good governance which are the dividends of democracy. If this means we have a rubber stamp assembly like the one in Trump’s America let’s bring it on lol 😀😅😄. What’s your view pls share thanks
